Poem: The Deciding Toss (By: Mico Celedonio)

Decisions are made every single day
From the moment you open your eyes
Rising from the past
To closing your eyes
Welcoming the future

Decisions are needed
It writes the pages
On the book called life
A decision which can lead
To endless possibilities
Or a single opportunity

Making a decision is not easy
The possibilities are endless
For not making a decision
Endless possibilities
That could’ve been opportunities
Only to happen
From a choice to be made

No one said it’s going to be easy
Everyone has to do it eventually
Decide for yourself
For your present and future
To connect the strings
On the web of life
You have to decide

Faced with a hard decision?
Toss the coin and decide
A decision will be made
Not because of which side landed
But because of a decision already made
As the coin spins in the air
Your heart stops time and decides

For that brief moment in time
You decided
Which side
You wanted the coin
To land

No One is Spared from the Horrors of War: ‘The Innocents’ Movie Review (By: Maha Jammoul)

A historical drama set in the 1940s, The Innocents premiered as Agnus Dei at the Sundance Film Festival this year. Not to be confused with the 1961’s adaptation of ‘The Turn of the Screw’, Agnus Dei tells the story of a real-life horrifying ordeal faced by the Polish nuns in 1945.

Six months after the end of the 2nd Word War, December 1945, a young French Red Cross doctor tending to wounded Polish soldiers was approached by a nun begging for help without giving any explanation. Unable to fully understand the matter at hand, the doctor politely refuses to oblige by saying she’s very busy with the soldiers and advising the nun to ask the Polish Red Cross instead for assistance.

After completing a surgery, Mathilde lit a cigarette and gazed through the window only to see the same Polish nun praying on her knees outside in a cold and snowy December. This has provoked the young doctor to follow the nun’s request and go with her to the convent. Unaware of what awaits her there, Mathilde witnesses one of the most shocking and horrifying outcomes brought about by World War II in Poland.

The young doctors faces challenges ahead after this discovery and she’s pitted against her moral duties and occupational duties. The movie sees Mathilde in a very supportive, empathetic, and nurturing role as more shocks and twists are revealed later on.

Without giving out any information that might be classified as spoiler, The Innocents is a definitely a must-watch as Anne Fontaine brilliantly brings a historic and true life events to the big screen. Lou De Laage who plays Mathilde is nothing short of brilliant as she depicts how resourceful and helpful the young Madeleine Pauliac was. Overall, the movie is deeply moving and stimulating as it spits out a very strong question: Is it possible to hold onto one’s faith after being tremendously violated and ridiculed? If yes, how?
