Movie Review: John Wick: Chapter 2 (By: Ryan Miranda)

This is one of the anticipated movies of 2017 because of its predecessor movie, John Wick (2014). John Wick was an amazing action/revenge movie that changed one of the clichés of action movies which does not use “fast action cuts” on its action scenes.

The Plot (Spoilers Beware*)

The plot continues the story of John Wick. The first act is about him retrieving his stolen car from the first movie from one of the mobs who stole it. Packed with great car chase scenes, fight scenes, and lastly action scenes while delivering a deadpan style of comedy.

As the story progress John Wick was forced to work again as a hitman by Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio). He is part of the ‘Neapolitan Camorra’ which John made a blood debt in order for him to live a quiet life with his late wife. The work for John is to assassinate Santino’s sister who is currently the head of Neapolitan Camorra so that she is replaced as one of high seats of international council. John Wick cannot decline this task and he must do the job as this is part one of the contract that he must obey his blood debt no matter what the task is.

As a sequel, it really delivered on another level than its previous movie by turning up its action scenes which are beautifully executed and shot by its cinematography. The stunt works of its action scenes really gives you an adrenaline as you watch John Wick (Keanu Reeves) fight enemies and other hitmen as well. In terms of the gun action scenes the movie did a great job delivering a real feel of the guns impact, as well as the sound of the gun shots. The movie does not shy away violence, partial nudity, as well as profanity and intense scenes as it has a Rated R rating so just be aware it.

The supporting cast did as amazing job as well like for example Ruby Rose as Ares as one of Santino’s top protector, Loonie Lynn as Cassian another hitman who fights John in the movie, and Keanu’s co-star in the Matrix Trilogy Laurence Fishburne as Bowery King who did an amazing job during the scene he had with Keanu. Notable mention, Ian McShane as Winston, Lance Reddick as Charon.

Although the movie is not perfect as well as some might think that the movie’s logic is somewhat unrealistic as its one of its scenes shows a suppressed gun battle through a subway station crowd with John Wick and Cassian (Loonie Lynn) and why there are no cops involved during the scenes are at anyone’s guess. But we have to remember the movie’s logic or universe differs from ours. That’s the deadpan comedy the movie delivers through the help of Keanu Reeves’s acting performance.

As a final thought about this movie, if you want to watch a radical action movie that delivers a great action scenes and good acting performances then this movie is for you. I personally enjoyed the movie and for me, it really succeeds as a sequel for the 2014’s movie. Feel free to check the movie while its out in the cinemas as this movie really is an enjoyable movie action experience.
